Disrupting the Dream: Surreal Narratives from the Norval Foundation Collection brings together a selection of works that reflect the spirit of Surrealism, reinterpreted through contemporary African and diasporic perspectives. This exhibition delves into the subconscious, the dreamlike, and the uncanny, exploring how artists engage with symbolic narratives, cultural memory, and the interplay of reality and imagination. By drawing from the Norval Foundation’s collection, this exhibition presents a breadth of artistic expression across photography and mixed media, with the strongest focus being on figurative painting. Surrealism’s historical foundation was rooted in a response to the anxieties of its time—war, colonialism, and the mechanization of society. Today, the need to explore alternative realities feels urgent once again.
